About us

Migration Competence Center (MCC) at the Faculty of Sociology,

Yerevan State University

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the newly established as well as reestablished countries which lost their independence by joining Soviet Union, found themselves in the relatively free and liberal space with new problems and opportunities. For the citizens of the former superpower, migration became one of the solution or challenges in search for alternative job, for international education, marriage, etc. Accordingly, international experience in the wider fields of Policy making and regulation of migratory flows has been used to make appropriate political decisions and to found state and non-state bodies to tackle migratory issues. In the field of academia, establishment of migration resource centers and teaching migration studies and courses is made a priority.

Accordingly, Migration Competence Center (MCC) was established in 2011 at the Faculty of Sociology, Yerevan State University, under the EU Tempus IV joint project, and in cooperation with Tbilisi State University, University of Graz (Austria), University of Alicante (Spain), University of Oldenburg (Germany) and other partners (http://www.mcc.ysu.am). The aim and need in having the Center established is determined by migration problems around the world, and in the region of Eurasia in particular. Having Armenia in the center of its research focus, MCC is concentrated on the following internationally important topics and on actual problems in Armenia and around, such as:

  • Internal migrantion
  • Permanent migration
  • Short- and long-term labor migrantion
  • Trade migration
  • Shuttle migration
  • Irregular migration
  • Trafficking victims
  • Immigration
  • Asylum seekers
  • Return migrants, repatriates
  • Re-emigration
  • Environmental migrantion
  • Refugees.

Although a considerable amount of research aimed at revealing different aspects and problems of migration has been conducted since mid-90s by various organizations, the lack of academic work dedicated to the regulation of the current migratory situation, as well as a complete multifaceted picture of the migration in the country is quite evident. Thus, the establishment of MCC at YSU and its further work will serve to fill the gap. In particular, MCC is consistent with the duties of Armenia within the framework of international conventions, agreements and regulations. Establishment of MCC at the Faculty of Sociology of YSU is primarily preconditioned by the fact that the Faculty with its academic and research staff has an extensive and advanced experience of several decades in the field of migration studies and professional contribution to the relevant domestic and international projects.

Among the missions of MCC, there are the following obligations:

  • Creation of the on-line platform to provide and trigger productive collaboration between the research centers and specialists in the field of migration studies in the world, with database on recent migration studies, domestic and joint projects;
  • Provision of legal database on migration policies and regulation,
  • Provision of scientific and research materials, readings and up-to-date information concerning migration in the region to support migration studies and research;
  • Ongoing monitoring and prognosis;
  • Implementation of national and international research projects and activities, organization of conferences and seminars;
  • Development and approbation of relevant research methodology in the fields of Migration Studies;
  • Expertise on migration policies and projects.

MCC also serves as source to accompany graduate program in Migration and Conflict Studies at the Faculty of Sociology of Yerevan State University.
